Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker became a hero to some this year for his fight with that state’s public-employee unions. Similarly, Gov. Scott and the Legislature drew praise from some in 2011 for making hundreds of thousands of employees contribute toward their pensions.

In both cases, though, these Republican governors were being politically selective in their targets. Gov. Walker exempted police and fire unions, which tend to favor the GOP. Gov. Scott and the Legislature went after the teachers union but have gone easier on police and fire unions, which means that Tallahassee hasn’t gotten at the core of Florida’s pension problem.
