Even if you agree that government shouldn’t tell business how to do business, a proposal in the Florida Legislature that would pre-empt local governments from exerting local control is bad public policy.

At the moment, Florida businesses are pressuring state lawmakers to pass a bill that would prohibit local governments from passing local wage, benefits and sick-time ordinances.

Members of this editorial board are divided on the need for local wage laws. Some of us argue that more should be done to raise the floor for workers, given the growing divide between the rich and poor. Others of us think the paperwork nightmare of complying with all these local laws will keep good businesses, especially small businesses, from submitting quality, low-cost bids for local government work — and that ultimately hurts taxpayers.
