Telecom-backed bill targets local taxpayers, local control
SB 596 and HB 687 (“Telecoms Before Taxpayers Bill”) grants telecom giants the power to use public infrastructure at virtually no cost, giving well-connected companies a hefty handout at the expense of local taxpayers. Under SB 596 and HB 687, telecoms would gain nearly unrestricted access to local traffic signals, light posts and other taxpayer-funded and maintained properties while bypassing local measures that protect public health, safety and welfare.
The Bottom Line: SB 596 and HB 687 gut local control, bypass local safeguards and offer a free ride to multibillion dollar telecom companies at taxpayer expense.
